Optionals Compete at State…Gain Valuable Experience…Some Hardware

The optional girls of NGTC added to the young and already colorful history of Northwest Gymnastics by competing at the Oregon State Gymnastics Championships for Optionals on Sunday, March 29.  The event, held at the Tualatin Hills Recreation Center in Beaverton, saw top gymnasts from around the state that had pre-qualified for this chance of a state championship.

The girls each went in with high hopes and aspirations of the "fairy tale" ending to an already great season.  However, it wasn’t to be this year as a combination of mistakes quickly faded any hopes of an overall championship, for the team or for individuals.

Abby Lian won top honors for the NGTC crew with an overall 10th Place finish!   Not bad considering she turned in one of her worst scores of the season on Beam and Vault.   Still, she came away with an 8th place and 3rd place State Finish.

Kelsey Harnar also came away with a couple medals for her work on Beam and 10th Place Overall.

Shelby Hannsman gave it her all as did Kirsten Smith during the earlier session, but it just wasn’t to be this day.

Despite the dissapointing finish, all the girls are to be commended for their enthusiasm, support of their teammates, and overall improvement during this season!

A complete scoring overview and wrap-up will be available later this week online, or at the gym!

NGTC won the combined score format (counting the top-3 scores from each event.

Perhaps most impressively, the girls did it with only 6 girls.  While most teams had 15 or more to pick the 3 best scores, NGTC did it with only 6.

Kirsten Smith and Kelsey Harner were both individual all-around champions at Level 7.  Peyton Sylvester won the all-around for Level 5 with 36.15!

NOTES:   Megan Townley injured her right ankle and possibly knee during the floor exercise.  It is unknown the extent of her injury but our thoughts are with her and her family as she recovers…   We certainly hope and her injuries aren’t serious and long-lasting.  A true winner, Megan stayed on the floor and watched each of the remaining two events, then joined the team at Red Robin dinner after the victory, bag of ice firmly tied to her ankle.
